Our Vision Statement:

 Shkoday Abinojiiwak Obimiwedoon will strive to empower our children to attain goals of mutual respect for culture, lifestyle and themselves through traditional teachings in a circle of safety, education and self-valuing.

Our Mission Statement:

 Shkoday Abinojiiwak Obimiwedoon will exist to lead the children and caregivers to a place of mental, emotional and spiritual strength by providing a healthy environment that reflects the cultural values of the extended family through the presence of strong, caring people who come to share and carry on their love, skills, language and knowledge.

Our Objectives:

 •       promote the health, education, nutrition, holistic development and wellbeing of Aboriginal children two to six years of age

 •       provide a community based program that is built on the identified needs and concerns of Aboriginal children and their families

 •       empower and encourage Aboriginal parents/caregivers as primary teachers to provide traditional and cultural parenting to Aboriginal children.

 •       support the spiritual, emotional, intellectual and physical growth of each Aboriginal child in a cultural and academic learning environment.

 •       encourage Aboriginal parent/caregiver involvement and the provision of parental support in all aspects of our program.


Children’s Programming

Culture & language, social support, parental/caregiver involvement, health, nutrition, and education are the building blocks of Aboriginal Head Start. Children engage in play-based activities such as creative art, fine/gross motor skills, science, dramatic play, and music allowing for optimal growth in a culturally enriched and nurturing environment.


Toddler Program

(18-30 months) Alternating half-days (10:00 am- 1:00 pm) with parental/caregiver attendance


Pre-School Program

(31 months- 5 years) Alternating full-days



(44-72 months) Alternating full-days


Subsidized Childcare Services

Available for Aboriginal children (31 months- 5 years) through the District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board.

Registration is accepted on an on-going basis and please note there is no programming on Fridays.
